Educational News - Teacher Shortages - 'No applications' for some second-level teaching vacancies

Date Uploaded: 04/03/2016

Teacher Shortages - Second-level schools are facing "very serious difficulties" in getting teachers in certain subjects and sometimes there are no applicants for vacancies.

The main problems are with Irish, modern European languages and home economics, even when full-time hours are offered.

Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools (ACCS) president Antoinette Nic Gearailt says the situation is at "crisis point".

Addressing the ACCS annual conference today, Ms Nic Gearailt suggests solutions, including training other teachers in areas experiencing a shortage and a review of degree subject combinations to address imbalances between teacher supply. Ms Nic Gearailt also calls for an end to the two-tier pay structure in teaching.
