Looking for a Job? - Global slowdown starts to hit Irish jobs market

Looking for a Job? - More people are chasing almost the same number of available jobs as a year ago, according to the latest employment monitor from recruitment firm Morgan McKinley.

The availability of professional jobs remained almost constant at 37,171 in the first three months of 2016 compared to the same period last year, while the number of professionals seeking jobs was up 4pc over the period to 23,140. IT, engineering, supply chain and multilingual candidates are the most in demand so far this year.

Talent shortages remain across IT, with Javascript developers most in demand. On a monthly basis professional job opportunities increased by 2pc in March, compared to February 2016, while the number of professionals seeking new roles was down 1pc in March, compared to the previous month.

"Generally, quarter one of 2016 has been positive in terms of hiring confidence and this is in line with the CSO figures for March that indicate unemployment rates have fallen to an eight year low," Morgan McKinley Ireland's chief operations officer Karen O'Flaherty said.

The climate is less buoyant abroad and that is already being felt in employment in areas such as funds and banking, sectors where recruitment is static, she said.

In financial services generally, there was a significant uplift in the number of insurance and personal banking roles nationwide. Sectors that remain robust and better isolated from the global uncertainty include engineering and supply chain, according to the Morgan McKinley data.

A shortage of engineering talent in 2015 has abated, in part due to the return of professionals, mainly from Australia and Canada. The pharmaceutical, food and medical devices sectors continue to drive demand for engineering, procurement and production professionals, and Morgan McKinley is predicting the food sector to see significant growth this year.

For those with language skills, the number of permanent roles on offer is up and German, Dutch and Nordic languages were the most sought after.

The Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor tracks the number of new job vacancies and new candidates each month.
