Graduate Career Guidance

We recently received a call from a concerned parent, and she asked: ‘did we provide graduate career guidance, my son who is a recent graduate wants to do a post graduate course in order to change direction – can you help?’.  And of-course, I said, absolutely, we provide graduate career guidance all over Ireland.  Which got me thinking.  Maybe we should post a number of career guidance queries that graduates have submitted over the past year or so.

‘I am recently graduated from college after studying B.A in Contemporary Culture and Society. I currently work in a supermarket but would like to possibly further my studies to postgraduate in order to find a job to suit me. I would like to know what my options would be in terms of realistically getting employment through this route. Thank you.’ Age, 22.

‘Hi, I have graduated from NUIG with a bachelor of commerce specialising in HR. however I want go get into teaching second level business however I want another subject. I am looking for advise on diplomas I could do before the hdip to have more than one subject.’ Age, 22

‘Hello Career Guidance.ie, I am an Arts & Humanities graduate of Trinity College Dublin, I have a background in delivering exceptional customer service and sales at Apple Inc. for two years. Recently I worked for the UK telecom network, EE in another service & sales role. I am currently living in Donegal, and would prefer an appointment in Letterkenny or Derry City if possible. My reason for contacting is that I feel I have lost my path. I knew mid-way through my college degree that it wasn’t for me, but completed it anyway. After college I spent two years at Apple, where I worked hard and saw a career lasting a long time there. However, toward the end of my second year I was forced to leaved due to continued illness. I felt I couldn’t cut it in the faced-paced world of Apple as I have no business background, or know-how in advancing upward to HR, Sales, Admin, etc.I lost confidence in my ability at Apple and took a career gap. During my gap year, I pursued travelling abroad to much of Europe, and also Asia (2014). Having finished my most recent job at the start of December, I find myself at a crossroads and would appreciate any career guidance/ help in driving me back on the right path again. My apologies if any of this is long-winded, I know that coming up to Christmas it is an especially busy time but please consider offering me an appointment as I feel I need the advice. Thank you for reading & warmest regards.’ Age, 26

‘Hi, I have a music degree and have worked in various jobs since I graduated in 2012. I am now out of work and am looking to get some direction back into my career and my life in general. The areas I have worked in (management and administration) have left me with a fairly negative view of the workplace and I am worried that I will always hate my job! I would like to understand what it is that I am actually passionate about and design a pathway so that I can work in that area eventually. I am considering returning to college to do a postgraduate course, however given that this would require a significant financial investment (which I don’t have yet!) I need to be really sure that what I do will suit me and that I will be able to find work in that area. I hope that all makes sense. Thanks.’  Age, 25.
