CV Format

CV Formats – There are two main types of CV, a Chronological CV and a Functional CV.

CV Format – Chronological CV

This is the most accepted, uncomplicated and easy to prepare CV format. It provides the reader with a job/career history, education and other important information in a logical, sequential order.

Advantages

  • Where your last employer is an important consideration i.e. a well-known company with a good reputation
  • Where your next career move is in the same field as your previous jobs
  • Where your career history shows a sustained upward path and career development
  • Where your former job titles are in demand in the current job market

Disadvantages

  • Where your work history has a number of gaps
  • When you are looking for a career change or a move to a new business sector
  • Where your job changes might be seen as too frequent
  • Where you wish to avoid emphasising your age or where you have been doing the same job for a long time

CV Format Two – Functional or Skills-based CV

This CV format requires careful thought because you must group your skills into categories according to skill/competence/functional areas. It is a useful way of demonstrating your suitability for a job.

Advantages

  • Where you wish to highlight specific skills/abilities and achievements to match the job you are applying for
  • Where you are changing career direction or where much of your work has been freelance or consulting
  • Where you have held several jobs and would prefer to describe all your transferable skills
  • Where you are a graduate and want to include skills and responsibilities used during university, voluntary or unpaid work
  • Where your job record has been irregular through unemployment, redundancy, ill health, parenting etc.

 Disadvantages

  • Tends to take a lot longer to think about and put together
  • Where you have a limited number of functions in your jobs, i.e. you don’t have transferable skills to offer
  • Your career path is not shown until the second page
  • The style may not be to everyone’s taste
