Aptitude Tests

Why Aptitude Tests?

Sometimes, people want a second opinion and a written, scientifically proven opinion is usually even better! My Father (a career guidance practitioner for 40 years or so) very rarely undertook aptitude tests for clients. He had a talent for placing a person within a career, he could read a personality and match a suitable career for that person. He didn’t need aptitude tests, but he never dismissed aptitude tests or their significance.

When I completed my MA in Career Guidance at Canterbury Christ Church University, surprisingly there was no psychometric or aptitude testing as part of our course curriculum. Well, maybe I was’nt so surprised after all. The head of the course dictated the course content along with the needs of industry and clients. I can understand why our department head excluded aptitude tests, some practitioners can over rely on the reports and perhaps shy away from their natural ability to provide face to face human career guidance. One could use it as a crutch, as an unnecessary first port of analyses when their client is in front of them waiting their skilled and trained guidance. Perhaps aptitude tests are a lazy, easy way out!! Maybe our course head had a point.

Now, turning back to my Father’s experience of aptitude test. He did in fact undertake aptitude tests for clients on the odd occasion (if I recall he used them on me!!), and usually it was the client that insisted. I believe there are certain career guidance clients that need that reassurance, which is perfectly fine. And they wanted it in writing.  Maybe its something to do with the psychology of certain people, lets leave that discussion for another day!!

Anyway, what aptitude tests can you take on www.CareerGuidance.ie? Well, check out this Aptitude Tests link.
