Course Overview/Contact:

The Postgraduate Certificates programmes which can be full-time or part-time are designed to expand and enhance existing professional knowledge and to produce high quality evidence based practitioners who are better positioned to develop their individual disciplines as well as the wider health agenda.  The programmes will offer participants the opportunity to critically examine and reflect on their own practice and to implement mechanisms of change to enhance current practice.

  • To discuss professional issues relating to the description, classification and ramifications of pain 
  • To examine the different sectors of patients/clients, service providers and models of service, and their differing needs
  • To source, critically appraise and synthesise the most up-to-date research in pain
  • To develop advanced level assessment and identification of appropriate treatment techniques/approaches and strategies in the management of pain
  • To integrate research knowledge with clinical expertise and patient preference to establish the means of providing cost-effective, high quality clinical service in this specialist area

Graduate Profile:

This programme is of interest to health care professionals working across a range of settings and with varied client groups and who seek to adopt an evidence based approach to the assessment and management of pain and to develop an advanced level of knowledge and clinical reasoning ability about pain.

Programme Content:

 Spring Semester

  • PY5021* Evidence Based Practice

Student must take PY5021 Evidence Based Practice plus 2 other modules of their choice.
In the event of low numbers of registrations on a particular module, your options will be discussed with you by the Course Director.

Programme Structure
3 modules to be completed within one academic year, including one compulsory core module. Students may select 3 modules in one semester if modules are available.

Mode of delivery
Methods of delivery include classroom based lectures, tutorials and workshops, distance learning and self-directed learning.

ECTS credits: 30
Every effort will be made to provide a flexible schedule. This may include day, evenings, weekends and/or use of online and distance learning resources. This can be discussed with the Course Director.

Entry Requirements:

Who Can Apply
Healthcare clinicians with a professionally and academically accredited BSc Hons (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) or equivalent in a health profession.

What to Include with your Application

  • Qualification transcripts and certificates 
  • English language qualification if English is not your first language 
  • Certified English translations of your transcripts/certificates where the originals are in a language other than English. 
  • A copy of your birth certificate (long document)

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):

Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:

  • Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
  • Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
  • TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
  • IELTS – composite score 7.5 and not less than 7 in any one component
  • English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
  • GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
  • University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade A
  • GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
