Clinical Therapies at the University of Limerick offers a suite of Postgraduate Certificates for qualified healthcare professionals. The programmes are designed to expand existing professional knowledge and to produce high quality evidence based practitioners who are better positioned to develop their individual disciplines as well as the wider health agenda. They aim to produce graduates who are committed to life long learning. The programmes will offer participants the opportunity to critically examine and reflect on their own practice and to implement mechanisms of change to enhance current practice.

Programme Aim:

  • To discuss professional issues relating to the provision of healthcare services
  • To examine the different sectors of patients/clients, service providers and models of service, and their differing needs
  • To source, critically appraise and synthesise the most up-to-date research in musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • To acquire advanced level of clinical reasoning and critical thinking
  • To develop advanced level assessment and identification of service need in the students area of clinical practice
  • To integrate research knowledge with clinical expertise and patient preference to establish the means of providing cost-effective, high quality clinical service in this specialist area.

Graduate Profile:

This programme is of interest to physiotherapists and medical doctors working across a range of settings and with varied client groups and who seek to enhance their knowledge in working with musculoskeletal conditions (peripheral and spinal) with an option to pursue a module relating to rheumatology and orthopaedics.

  • PY5032 Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy (peripheral)
  • PY5042 Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy (spinal)

Students must take PY5021 Evidence Based Practice plus 2 other modules of their choice.
In the event of low numbers of registrations on a particular module, your options will be discussed with you by the Course Director.

Programme Structure
3 modules to be completed within one academic year, including one compulsory core module. Students may select 3 modules in one semester if modules are available.

Mode of delivery
Methods of delivery include classroom based lectures, tutorials and workshops, distance learning and self-directed learning.

Entry Requirements:

Who can apply
Applicants must be qualified Physiotherapists with a professionally and academically accredited BSc (Hons) or equivalent in Physiotherapy or be a Medical Doctor.

What to Include with your Application

  • Qualification transcripts and certificates
  • English language qualification(s) if English is not your first language
  • Certified English translation of your transcripts/certificates where the original transcripts are in a language other than English
  • A copy of your birth certificate (long document)

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):

Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:

  • Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
  • Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
  • TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
  • IELTS – composite score 7.5 and not less than 7 in any one component.
  • English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
  • GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
  • University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade A
  • GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
