This new programme will enhance the knowledge and skills of those who work with children with developmental language and communication impairments. Please note that this programme does not lead to a qualification in speech and language therapy.
There are three modules: Narratives in Childhood (10 credits):, Using Evidence in Practice (10 credits) and Advanced Research Methods (10 credits). In the Narratives in Childhood module, participants will learn about the importance of narrative in the realisation of communicative, social, and literacy skills in childhood. This module will include theoretical and practical perspsectives in relation to narratives as a means of identity construction in childhood.
There will also be skills-based training in relation to assessment and intervention using narrative approaches. The Using Evidence in Practice module will introduce participants to the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) and will facilitate them to develop skills in relation to using evidence to inform their practice. The Advanced Research Methods module will enable participants to explore the methodological and practical issues about research. It will help participants to determine the right research design for their work and is an opportunity to debate, challenge, and clarify research issues.
This programme is delivered using blended learning to meet the needs of busy practitioners. Participants will attend some sessions in NUI Galway and will also participate in online learning activities. This programme provides opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and will enhance the knowledge and skills of those who work with children with developmental language and communication impairments.
Applicants will be expected to possess a good quality degree at NFQ Level 8 (at least an upper Second Class Honours degree) or an equivalent qualification. Applicants who are in employment will be requested to provide evidence of written support.
